Trailing of the Sheep Festival
Featuring Special Guest Mark Kurlansky
October 13 - 16, 2006

The premier festival of its kind anywhere, The Trailing of the Sheep Festival features a weekend full of Basque food, culture, dancing, and, of course, lots of sheep. And this year we are especially pleased to announce a special appearance by celebrated author
Mark Kurlansky.
During the early 1900s, Ketchum was the second greatest sheep-town in the world, after Sydney, Australia. Celebrating this rich heritage, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival occurs during the traditional migration of shepherds and their flocks from high-mountain grazing grounds to low desert for the winter. Today, as the sheep pass through the towns of Ketchum and Hailey, they and their masters are honored by hosts of Basque dancers, storytellers working in the rich tradition of the Shepherds, camp cooking exhibitions, lots of food, and a parade.
