Jacques Francois Blondel
b.1705 d.1774
Jacques Francois Blondel was perhaps the most influential figure in architecture in the 18th century, as architect for Louis XV. His teachings and theories constitute the first "body of doctrines" in the building of French architectural theory. More importantly however, he established the Ecole des Arts in 1740, which gave rise to some of the most gifted and influential architects of the next generation: Boullee, Brongniart, Chalgrin, Chambers, Desprez, de Wailly, Gondoin, Ledoux, and Rondelet to name just a few. L'architecture Francais was his most important work, and one of the most important architectural works ever produced, providing analysis of historical conditions for each architectural example (many of which are otherwise unrecorded), as well as illustrations of formal solutions of a vast repertory of monumental and domestic buildings. The work was begun in 1752, with the completion of the fourth volume in 1756. The resulting masterpiece composes a "valuable, extensive, written and visual record of France's architectural past."
