{ Cokie Roberts }

 

 

Born Martha Mary Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs in 1943, was dubbed "Cokie" by her brother Tommy who couldn't pronounce Corinne.   Roberts's father was the late Hale Boggs who served as Majority Leader of the House of Representatives until his death in a twin engine plane crash in a remote section of Alaska.  Her mother, Linda Claiborne Boggs, replaced Hale in Congress and served several years.  Cokie graduated from Wellesley with a degree in Political Science.  Roberts received a 1985 Distinguished Alumnae Achievement Award in recognition of "excellence and distinction in professional pursuits."  She is the recipient of over 15 honorary degrees and was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.   Roberts is a political analyst for ABC News and NPR. During her more than 30 years in broadcasting, she has won numerous awards and honors, including two Emmy Awards, induction into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and a citation from the American Women in Radio and Television as of one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting.  She also Roberts achieved the highest honor in public radio, the Edward R. Murrow Award. She was the first broadcast journalist to win the highly prestigious Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for coverage of Congress. In addition to her appearances on the airwaves, she and her husband, Steven V. Roberts, write a weekly newspaper column, are contributing editors to USA Magazine, and wrote The New York Times bestseller From This Day Forward. She is also the author of the bestseller We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters and her recent book, Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation.   Roberts and her husband live in Washington, D. C.
