Vardis Fisher can be considered Idaho's most famous native wrter, as well as one of our favorite curmudgeonly intellects.   Awarded the Harper Prize for fiction in 1939, his writing has been favorably compared to Thomas Wolfe, Erskine Caldwell, and James T. Farrell, among others.  He was the Idaho State Director of the Federal Writer's Project beginning in 1935, and produced the three Idaho contributions to the project.  He is most well-known for his book Mountain Man, which became the movie Jeremiah Johnson, starring Robert Redford.  He left us a body of work that is quintessentially Idahoan - authentic, powerful, and a bit cantankerous.
